What is this site?
SampLab Pro is a free suite of audio and MIDI utilities that run locally in the browser. It puts melody-to-MIDI, tempo and key estimation, chord recognition, frequency-band filtering, MIDI preview playback, and draft lead sheets behind one entry point—so creators can get an editable reference quickly without uploading sample audio to a server. Processing stays on the device and needs no account; outputs are algorithmic estimates that should be checked by ear. The site is not affiliated with the Samplab VST or samplab.com.
Core features
- Estimate downloadable MIDI from audio locally with Spotify Basic Pitch; clearer single notes or single instruments work better
- Estimate BPM and musical key from imported audio, with an uncalibrated confidence score as a reference
- Detect chord changes in audio and output timestamped chord labels and other structured results
- Split audio with low/mid/high band filters (about 180/900/2800 Hz)—not stem separation
- Render MIDI to preview audio in the browser with lightweight oscillators (not sampled instruments; CC and pitch bend unsupported)
- Generate draft lead sheets from MIDI, with printable preview and MusicXML export
Common use cases
- Producers convert a sampled melody to MIDI first, then revoice and edit notes in a DAW
- Before arranging or beatmatching, use BPM & Key Finder to estimate tempo and key and reduce blind trial-and-error
- When an unpublished demo should not leave the device, run local transcription or analysis in the browser
- In class or self-study, use transcription, chord estimates, or draft lead sheets as listening and structure references
- When you only have MIDI and want a rough listen first, preview with MIDI to Audio
Who is it for?
- Producers and arrangers who need a quick transcription or analysis reference before refining in a DAW
- Independent creators who prefer local processing and do not want to register or upload sample audio
- Music education settings that treat results as teaching or practice aids
- Less suitable for users who need vocal/drum/bass stem separation, publication-grade engraving, or multi-track fine pitch editing workflows
- Also less suitable when you need realistic sampled instrument playback or a full offline studio pipeline
How does it compare to similar tools?
Choose by need rather than ranking “best”:
- For a quick pass on a clear melody or single instrument, with files staying on-device: a browser-local tool is usually simpler
- For multi-track stem separation, per-voice fine editing, or deep DAW timeline integration: desktop production software fits better
- Frequency Band Splitter only filters bands; for vocal/instrument stem isolation, use a dedicated separation tool
- Lead Sheet Generator output is a draft reference, not publication-grade engraving—use dedicated notation software for formal scores
FAQ
Q: Are audio files uploaded to a server?
A: No. Decoding and analysis run locally in the browser. Source files and converted results are not uploaded to SampLab Pro servers.
Q: Can Frequency Band Splitter do AI stem separation?
A: No. It filters low/mid/high bands and cannot isolate vocal, drum, or bass stems from a mix.
Q: Are exported MIDI or lead sheets ready for a final release?
A: Usually not. Outputs are algorithmic estimates or draft notation; review and edit them in a piano roll or professional software before production use.
Q: Is it free? Is it related to the Samplab VST?
A: It is currently free, with no account or subscription. It is an independent project and is not affiliated with the Samplab VST or samplab.com.
